Question???
In chapter 13 it talks about the first presidency leaving the Salt Lake Valley to attend the legislative session in Fillmore, the new state capital. I knew that Fillmore was the first state capital, but I have always wondered why. I would have thought that somewhere around the Salt Lake Valley would have been a more obvious pick than Fillmore. Does anyone know why Fillmore was chosen?

According to the text book Utah a Journey of Discovery, Fillmore was chosen to be the capital city because of its central location. I am guessing that when they created Fillmore as the capital they assumed that the surrounding areas would grow just as Salt Lake City had grown and having a centrally located capital just made sense. When the surrounding areas didn't develop as they had originally thought they most likely moved the capital to Salt Lake City because it held the largest population. I hope that helps.
